Education

Dr. Barnett completed a full four years of formal university orthodontic training following dental school. During his orthodontic residency, he concurrently earned a master’s degree in cellular and structural biology.

Dr. Barnett is currently an associate professor of clinical orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he travels twice a month to teach orthodontic residents. He has been recognized for 15 years of service, starting with his three years of orthodontic residency and followed by part-time teaching thereafter. Areas of particular interest to Dr. Barnett include the effects of sleep disordered breathing on the growth and development of children and the anatomical relationships leading to sleep apnea in adults.

Ongoing Education and Experience

Committed to continuing education and staying current with new technology, Dr. Barnett maintains memberships with the American Association of Orthodontists®, the American Dental Association®, the Texas Dental Association, the Capital Area Dental Society and the Cedar Park Study Club.

In addition, Dr. Barnett is involved with the Capital Area Dental Foundation and Smiles Change Lives. He also does volunteer work abroad to provide dental aid to indigenous people in Guatemala who could not otherwise afford it.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Barnett has also received many honors and awards, including:

• Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, having completed the voluntary board examination process through the only orthodontic board recognized by the American Dental Association and American Association of Orthodontists
• College Scholar by the College of Natural Sciences at UT-Austin
• Dean’s List all four years of dental school, graduating with highest honors
• The American Association of Orthodontists’ Dental Student Award for Exceptional Interest in Orthodontics
• The Teachers of Oral Diagnosis Graduating Senior Award
• The Excellence in Clinical Dentistry and Excellence in Basic Science awards for graduating dental students
• The Armand J. Guarino Award for Academic Excellence in Master’s Studies from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in San Antonio

Outside the Office

During his leisure time, as a native of Austin, Dr. Barnett does many of the great things Austinites enjoy that make our city unique. He loves attending University of Texas games, listening to as much live music as possible, and running or biking the Lady Bird Lake trail and area greenbelts.

You may see him at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, at one of our unique restaurants in south Austin, or at the dog park with his Boxer, Lyla. He is also a big soccer fan — he supports Austin FC and is a member of the Liverpool Supporters of Austin. He enjoys spending as much time with his family and friends as possible.

Daniela partnered with Dr. Barnett in 2019 to co-found Dental Sleep Solutions Austin, LLC. She graduated from Colgate University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature and was a Health Science Committee advisee for pre-dental sciences. As a pre-dental student, she acquired an extensive science background and spent countless hours shadowing at various dental offices in the greater Austin area. Prior to her partnership with Dr. Barnett, she spent many years as a dental consultant. Currently, she remains involved with the Capital Area Dental Foundation and she is also a volunteer with Christian Medical Missions Inc. (CMMI), an organization that offers free dental care at remote, indigenous villages in Guatemala.

Daniela contributes to our practice by having a strong background in the dental field. She loves taking care of our patients and having the opportunity to educate them through successful oral appliance therapy treatment and follow-up care. With this care, Daniela is better able to witness the improvement in their overall quality of life.

Daniela is originally from San Diego, CA so when she’s not at the office, she spends her time exploring Austin with her two Standard Poodles, Sir Lenny and Sofia. She loves Austin and enjoys the many great things this beautifully diverse city has to offer. Some of her favorite activities include attending a yoga class at Black Swan, an intimate concert at Moody Theater, or eating at one of the many new restaurants that Austin has to offer.
